    The advent poem

    1st candle:
    När första ljuset brinner
    står julens dörr på glänt
    och alla är så glada
    att få fira advent

    2nd
    När andra ljuset brinner
    vi julklappar syr
    och vi bakar kakor
    och har ett fasligt styr

    3rd
     När tredje ljuset brinner
    är snart lucia här
    hon bjuder oss på kaffe
    och bud om julen bär

    4th
     När fjärde ljuset brinner
    vi hämtar julegran
    och alla barnen räknar
    dan före dan före dopparedan

-make the buns by spreading 1/2 of the dough
-spread butter, sugar and cinnamon on it and roll
-cut out buns and let them rise for 30 min
-whip the egg and put on top of the buns and then add pearlsugar
-bake 7-8 min at 250 degree.

Hur man fiska kräftor?
Särskilt i sommar!

    In English:
After a wonderful crayfish party at Jeanette's, we had a wonderful crayfish fishing day today. By the way, crayfish party is a traditional Swedish party.
Karin and Henrik invited us for crayfish fishing at a lake called Källtorpssjön. To go to Källtorpssjön, you can take bus 401 from Slussen and get down at Hellasgården. To be able to crayfishing, you have to ask for a lisence. If you get it and decided to go for it, you have to pay around 250 kronor. Furthermore, you can only take crayfishes that are longer than 10cm and have to put back those that are shorter than 10cm. How do you fish crayfish? You fasten a dead fish to a round net, and leave it around vegetation but not around rocks. Crayfish often come out when it's dark, so then you should check for crayfish every 10min before they leave again.
The nature at Källtorpssjön is very beautiful. The sky is blue, trees are green, and water is clean. There are fishes, crayfishes, ducks, seagulls, and so on. There are also blueberries that can be eaten directly in the surroundings. It's so nice to swim here. It's also quite interesting that Swedes do not stay long in water, that's because water is often quite cold in Sweden.
Summer is wonderful in Sweden, but it is quite cold in the evening despite the warm sun during daytime. I love Stockholm! I love Sweden! Particularly in summer!

    Memories of class trip 2007

First time being travelling with a group of foreigners to my home country--- China, I bet you can't imagine how much fun we had!

After arriving in China, my Swedish friends asked me how to say 'thank you' in Chinese. I told that it is "谢谢(xiexie)". However, once at the restaurant when I was calling the waitress by "小姐(xiaojie)", which means 'Miss', Annelie seemed to realize something: "Oh, in China when you want to call the waitress, you say 'thank you'!"

Not only they learned some Chinese, I also learned some Swedish from them--- some very practical Swedish! Guess what it is? OK, it's "Jag måste kissa nu!" which means "I have to pee now (我现在必须撒尿)". Isn't it very useful, especially for travelling purposes?!

What about English? Can you tell me what does this panel mean? Don't know, eh? Haha, it is supposed to mean "For safety reasons, don't put your hands out when taking the cable"!

As we are a group of 15 girls and 1 boy, the girls decided to have a competition of who can find the cutest Chinese guy. Here are two representative guys found: 1) 刘德华 (Liudehua): Good shot! He's a superstar in all Chinese-speaking area. He's like the Asian Brad Pitt! 2) 无名氏卖西瓜郎 (some guy selling watermelon by the street): see picture.

When we got in an Internet cafe, it happened that somebody was watching a movie which happened to be in the part of some sexual scene (床戏), my Swedish friend whispered to me excitingly: "Look, he's watching porn! Chinese are watching porn!!!"

Fortbildningsdagarna 2007- Class trip to China

    Route: Beijing-Shanghai-Yunnan (Xishuangbanna-Lijiang-Dali-Kunming)

    Yunnan 云南
Yunnan is located in the southwest of China, with Tibet, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi being bordering provinces. Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam are its bordering countries. Yunnan province is drained by six major river systems. Yunnan is abundant in natural resources as well as ethnic culture, 25 out of 56 ethnic groups are found in Yunnan. Yunnan also has a pleasant climate all year round. However, Yunnan is one of the relatively undeveloped provinces of China.

Xishuangbanna is located in the very south part of Yunnan. The biggest minority in Xishuangbanna is Dai傣族, which is of the same root of Tai (Thailand) people. Dai minority is famous for their beautiful clothes, peacock dance and water-splashing festival. Other minorities such as the Aini爱尼 people, are still living in the maternal clan period. Rain forest and primitive forest occupies more than 60% of Xishuangbanna, thus making it the kingdom of plants and animals. In terms of plants, there are the dancing plants which have the ability to move with sound, the plants that pretend to fade quickly after being touched, the plants that have been dinosaurs' favorite food, the plants that catch insects, and endless others. As to animals, there are peacocks, antelopes, elephants and so on. At the elephant valley, you can stay in primitive people's houses in the trees and wait for elephant troups to pass by.

    Yunnan-Lijiang
Lijiang is located on a plateau of over 2400 meters altitude. One of the famous places of interests is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the Himalayas. In the ancient time, lovers that could not get together came here to commit suicide and therefore going to the "Happy Land" together. Lijiang is one major station on the Tea-Horse Trail茶马古道, which is the channel between Tibet and inland China during history; so-called Tea-Horse Trail because of the commerce of tea (from inland to Tibet) and horses (from Tibet to inland) exchange. The famous minority here are the Naxi纳西 people, they are the only modern people that are still using pictograph as written language. The Naxi pictograph has 1460 single characters, but compositions of characters are very complicated. Only 38 professors (called Dongba东巴) master the written language, among 300,000 Naxi people that talk the language. The pictograph is only passed on to internal male members. The papers that Naxi people use can stay thousands of years without being decayed; it is made from a plant called Raohua荛花 which grows at an altitude of 2600-3500 meters and is slightly poisonous, therefore keeping insects away but not doing any harm to human beings.

    Yunnan-Dali
Dali has been independent over the history. Dali is famous for its Dali stone, which is widely used in superior architecture. The major minority group here are the Bai白族 people.

    Yunnan-Kunming
Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province. The famous Stone forest in Kunming is a typical karst formation. Scientific research has shown that what is now the Stone Forest was 270 million years ago an immense expanse of water with a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed over the years on the seafloor.

    3/2007-5/2007

    Group: Jan-Åke Gustafsson

    Advisor:

    Eckardt Treuter

Third Rotation Project at Karolinska Institute  (BioNut, Novum, Huddinge)The widely used therapy for breast cancer by tamoxifen has unwanted side effects as well as developed resistance. Therefore, our efforts lie in investigation of anti-estrogen signalling pathways, especially the importance of coregulators in tamoxifen’s dual functionality. Mammalian two-hybrid assay and coimmunoprecipitation were carried out in cos-7 cells to study estrogen receptor and coregulator interactions in the presence/absence of ligands.

Second Rotation Project at Karolinska Institute  (IMM, Solna)
Cytotoxicity of mesoporous silica and rod-shaped gold nanoparticles was assessed in human breast cancer MCF-7 and lung cancer A549 cell lines, using Trypan blue exclusion as well as MTT assay. Particularly, MCF-7 cell lines with or without overexpression of an antioxidant enzyme microsomal glutathione transferase 1 (MGST1) were used to investigate whether the mechanism acts through oxidative stress.

Stem cells

Good morning, I'm going to talk about the improvements of the clinical applications of stem cells.
In the central hospital of China, a son donated part of his liver to his beloved mother. The operation has been extremely successful, but, are they happy? No, they are not. The mother still has to take pills to avoid organ repulsion, the son suffers painfully from losing part of his liver, and moreover, the mother's heart is broken into pieces each time seeing her son suffering at such a young age. Obviously, despite of the great advances in human transplantation sciences, they are far from perfect. Well, recently, a whole new concept of therapy using stem cells enters the scene, and attracted me into this brilliant field of research. Let me introduce you the idea, the problems and the promise of stem-cell based therapy.
First, what is a stem cell? By the way, have you ever seen a lizard? What happens if the tail of the lizard is cut off? Right, another tail will grow in its place bit by bit, and this is the contribution of stem cells. A stem cell is a potential cell, it can reproduce to grow into a tissue or an organ whenever given the right signal, but otherwise it stays there quietly and peacefully. On the other hand, stem cell is like an uncommitted young girl, whenever receiving a signal of love, she may become Mrs. Green, or Mrs. Johnasson, or whoever When stem cells receive the corresponding signal, it may turn into heart cells, or skin cells, or nerve cells, and so on.
Second, like all fields of scientific inquiry, research on stem cells raises as many questions as it answers. One main problem with clinical application is to be able to control the exact stage of stem cell development, not enough will lead to unrepaired tissue while too much will result in cancer. As Confucius said, "too little water cannot fulfill the cup, while too much water will split out". There's one potential method still being tested in the lab. It's to input a suicide mission into the stem cell, with the drug being the commander, so he decides when and where suicide should take place. Now the stem cell begin to replicate, until it fulfills the organ. But then, it doesn't stop, it continues to divide. And here comes the commander, he recognizes the redundant cells at first sight because of their specific features of actively dividing, while the other cells in the organ are stable. So he considers the redundant cells as runaway soldiers, and turns on the suicide command. So he commits suicide, he commits suicide, and he as well (Figure). And in this way we can control the exact quantity of stem cells needed.
Finally, stem cell-based therapies hold extraordinary promise for clinical applications. In hospitals, a few diseases such as Leukemia is already being treated with stem cell-based approaches. While the shortage of donors for traditional transplantation methods is over 400,000 per year, stem cells are abundantly existing in each of our bodies; while some parts of the body such as a hand cannot be taken from a live person but can only be taken from a deceded person, stem cell-based therapies are only taking some cells out of the body which does not cause much negative effects; while transplantation has a high rate of repellent reaction, stem cells may be able to be genetically engineered and reprogrammed to minimize repulsion; while patients are tortured by transplantation operations, clinical therapy using stem cells only cause some fever-like symptoms. More importantly, clinical applications are hugely benefiting from basic research especially since the development of system biology, which means that before, the molecular biologist was gathering small pieces of information only from his own lab, but now he can have a whole picture, a global view of the issue of interest.
Put simply, stem cells have two main features: replication and differentiation, both taking place under a particular signal. It holds great promise despite of its existing problems. At the time of this speech, 100 people died because they couldn't have transplantation operations in time, and 70,000 people are waiting for organ transplantation. Imagine a future when you don't need to suffer from the pain of operations, a future when you can lead a normal life even if you are born with one leg, a future when you can easily repair your skin damaged in a fire accident... Let's fight for such a better future!

    Rhetoric course 回顾2---Explanation

Subconsciousness

I have always had the experience of having an instinct about something, which later proved to be perfectly right! So I asked myself, shall I believe in my subconsciousness? Is it all about science or is it mere coincidence? The famous psychatrist Freud referred this as subconsciousness, and described subconsciousness as this immense part of an iceberg below the sea with this small upper part being consciousness. So, let's get closer to subconsciousness (Figure).
Firstly, subconsciousness is a huge pool of memory. According to scientific statistics, human brain is capable of memorizing 600 million books and learning 80 different languages, can you imagine that? Much more efficient than any existing computer. And moreover, information is selected and organized in different parts of our brain. However, we have only made use of 1% of our brain, and even Einstein has only made use of 2% of his brain.
Secondly, subconsciousness needs keys to be opened. Consciousness is active while subconsciousness is a passive activity, which needs to be waken up. You may recall a distant detail when put in the suitable context. You may dream of relevant things that you have encountered in the daytime. In research, this is used by a technique called hypnotherapy, which can activate parts of the brain while inactivating others. In an extreme case, a patient remembered the details of a book he has read 25 years ago, but forgot his name.
Finally, subconsciousness has the power of automatic thinking. There was an experienced fireman who had the instinct of danger during a rare fire case of re-explosion, but he didn't know the reasons even himself. Scientists studied his case, and found out that his mind was actually comparing and analysing automatically. So, during past fire cases, there were yellow flames and smoke, but this time the flame was red and no smoke, so that his mind couldn't say "it's a rare fire case of re-explosion", but could say "there's something wrong in comparison to past experience" (Figure). That's the truth of instinct and subconsciousness, and we should not ignore them because we can't see the reasons.
To sum up, subconsciousness is the part of the mind below the level of conscious perception, believe in your subconsciousness and make the best of it!
      Thank you!

    Rhetoric course 回顾1---Argument

The necessity to increase the difference of salary

Coming to Sweden, I noticed that Sweden has little differences in income compared to that of China or many other countries. However, in my opinion, different income is more than necessary.
In the first place, it is our rights to get different payment. Well, you agree with equal work, equal pay, do you? Then you probably agree that different work should get different pay! It would be just unfair if a great quantity of work is worth the same as a little.
Secondly, distance in earnings triggers motivation. Napoleon once said:"A great leader would give clear differences between honors and punishments". On the contrary, there was a time in China when people could not owe their own properties and obviously nobody has the impulse to work, which finally ended in great depression of economy. What would you do if you cannot owe your own property? Motivation is like an engine, driving us ahead. You may enjoy this type of relaxing life, but with the trends of globilization, competition is increasingly imposing on us and therefore calls urgently for different income systems.
Last but not least, different income may be one of the sources of hope. According to an investigation, suicide rates are four times higher in developed countries than in developing countries. Amazingly, rich people are sometimes tired of life while people living miserably have such a strong desire for life. I personally think that having goals and hope is the critical reason here, and different income may be one option of hope.
Well, on the other hand, one biggest problem of varied income may be the difference of the next generation from birth, from poor to rich. However, inheritance tax can help solve this problem.
All in all, in my opinion, varied income do more good than harm.
      Thank you!

    I hennes ögon glittrar
